Cartha Queens Park vs Aberdeen Grammar

Cartha Queens Park 15 Aberdeen Grammar 15

Aberdeen Grammar head coach Mike O'Donovan was much happier with his players after drawing their Premiership Two game with Cartha Queens Park 15-15 in Glasgow. But he was unhappy about surrendering a late try which levelled the scores.

"We managed to pluck a draw out of the jaws of victory," said O'Donovan.

"But this was a much improved performance. The guys showed passion and commitment, sadly missing from last week's game with Jedforest. They responded well to my demands and we can build on this."

In particular, the vaunted back row of Rab Barrie, Andrew Wilson and Sandy Warnock were nearly back to their best, though the latter was still struggling to shrug off his recent calf injury.

Centre Andrew Ritchie took over the kicking duties in the absence of Rob Lawson, opening the scoring with a penalty, before full back Andy Buchan scored an unconverted try, only to surrender a converted effort to the home side.

Leading 8-7 at the break, the visitors were quickly overhauled just after through a penalty from the home side.

Grammar then enjoyed their best spell and looked to have sealed victory when Ewan Campbell plunged over for the centre's first score of the season. Ritchie added the maximum to give the visitors a 15-10 advantage.

Late pressure led to a try for Cartha in the corner.

"I'm not unhappy with the outcome, but it's a game we should have won. Had we shown more composure with the line in view we would have won and really should have scored more tries, but the enthusiasm was there and we've laid down the marker," said O'Donovan.
